Why Metrics Are the Language of SaaS Fundraising
When a Series A investor asks how the business is doing, they do not want stories, they want numbers. Specifically, they want to see the standard set of SaaS metrics that reveal business health, growth trajectory, and scalability. Founders who speak fluently in these metrics build credibility faster than any pitch deck can.
StartupPocket.com's SaaS metrics dashboard template and benchmarking database give you both the measurement infrastructure and the context to know whether your numbers are good, average, or investor-ready. Supplement with benchmarks from Bessemer Venture Partners State of the Cloud and ChartMogul SaaS Benchmarks.
The 8 Core SaaS Metrics Every Founder Must Track
The eight core metrics are: Annual Recurring Revenue or ARR which is total contracted monthly revenue multiplied by 12; Monthly Recurring Revenue or MRR where you should track new MRR, expansion MRR, contraction MRR, and churned MRR separately; Churn Rate which is the percentage of revenue or customers lost in a period where negative churn is the goal; Net Revenue Retention or NRR where best-in-class SaaS exceeds 120 percent; Customer Acquisition Cost or CAC which is total sales and marketing spend divided by new customers acquired; Customer Lifetime Value or LTV which is average revenue per customer divided by churn rate; LTV to CAC Ratio which should exceed 3:1 for a healthy business; and CAC Payback Period where under 12 months is strong.
SaaS Benchmarks by Stage: How Do You Compare?
At pre-seed and seed stage with $0 to $1M ARR, strong benchmarks are 15 to 25 percent month-over-month growth, under 5 percent monthly churn, and an LTV to CAC ratio above 2:1. At Series A with $1M to $10M ARR, benchmarks are 100 to 200 percent year-over-year growth, net revenue retention above 110 percent, and CAC payback under 18 months. At Series B with $10M to $30M ARR, benchmarks are 80 to 150 percent year-over-year growth, NRR above 115 percent, and CAC payback under 12 months.
StartupPocket.com's benchmarking database provides real metrics from 10,000+ SaaS companies at every stage, segmented by vertical, ACV, and go-to-market motion. Compare yours against industry data on OpenView SaaS Benchmarks and KeyBanc SaaS Survey.
Building Your SaaS Metrics Dashboard
A great metrics dashboard should update automatically by connecting to your payment processor, CRM, and analytics tools; show trailing 12 months and month-over-month trends; include both lagging indicators like revenue and leading indicators like trial signups and activation rates; and be shareable with investors in a clean professional format.
StartupPocket.com's pre-built SaaS metrics dashboard template is compatible with Excel, Google Sheets, and Notion. It auto-calculates all 8 core metrics from your raw data inputs.
